The galactic Gate System, which connects the Human Domain’s space in a web of commerce, industry, and empire, disintegrates in a second, destroying all previous civilisation as we know it. Many fleets are dispersed and missing. The conveniences of the advanced era of civilization are now only memories. When a world is cut off from the Gate network, it starves, burns, and disintegrates. Now that the great Collapse has occurred, humanity is struggling to rebound in isolated regions across the cosmos.

Starsector’s plot revolves around a crowded area of space in the Perseus Arm that was mostly spared from damage from the catastrophe that wiped out the Domain. During the course of more than 200 cycles, humanity has been losing control of civilization and frantically clinging to what is left.
