The Cryolator is one of the first heavy weapons you will come across as you start your journey in Fallout 4. The protagonist will come across this weapon even before it ventures into the wasteland right inside Vault 111.
About The Cryolator
Imagine a flamer that shoots ice instead of flames. Well, the Cryolator is quite exactly that. The Cryolator was developed by the overseer of Vault 111 using components that were readily available within the vault.
The Cryolator is a cryogenic spray that temporarily freezes most enemies when they are exposed to it. Some enemies are unaffected by the freezing effect while others require a longer exposure. However, the biggest downside of the weapon is the lack of ammunition as it uses cryo cells as ammo. Perks that will help you get more out of the Cryolator are Bloody Mess, Demolition Expert and Heavy Gunner. A copy of Astoundingly Awesome Tales 5 will do 5% extra damage with the Cryolator.
Cryolator Modifications
The Cryolator only comes with a handful of modifications, so there’s not a lot of room for improvement here. Here are all the modifications you can make:
- Barrel: You can upgrade the stock barrel to a crystalizing barrel for improved damage, higher accuracy, and range.
- Stock: The standard stock can be upgraded to a recoil-compensating stock for better accuracy.
- Sights: The stock sight can have improved accuracy thanks to a glow sight.
Adhesive, plastic, steel, and screw are some of the components you will need to upgrade the parts of the Cryolator in Fallout 4.

How To Get The Cryolator
As stated previously, you will come across the Cryolator within the first few minutes after you start the game. However, you can’t obtain it instantly since you will require a master lockpicking skill to get the Cryolator out of the locked case. The protagonist does get excited seeing the weapon and states “Nice! Coming back later for you.” There are two simple ways to get the Cryolator for players who want to wield it and wage war.
First Method
The first method is the clean way to get your hands on this one-of-a-kind weapon.
- Get to level 18 at least
- Make sure your Locksmith perk is upgraded to master level
- Return to Vault 111, locate the locked case, and use your lockpicking skills to unlock the case and get your hands on the Cryolator.
Second Method
The second method will help you get the Cryolator earlier than if you follow the first method:
- Make sure Dogmeat is available to be your companion
- Select Dogmeat as your companion
- Head to Vault 111 with Dogmeat alongside you
- Trade and give Dogmeat a bobby pin
- Make your way to the front of the Cryolator
- Look at Dogmeat and use command
- Use fetch on Dogmeat and then click on items
- Dogmeat will then proceed to unlock the Cryolator case for you.
If for some reason it didn’t work the first time, get out of the Vault and come back after a while. Try your luck at it again and it should work.
